ISP Leased Line

What Is A Leased Line And Why Is It Used?

A leased line is a special type of connection that is always on, it doesn't switch on and off like a normal telephone connection, and is usually rented out to businesses.  A popular ISP leased line is known as T3, which has one of the fastest bandwidth available.  Other popular leased lines are T1 and ADSL.  While an individual could pay for a leased line to provide Internet for personal use, a leased line is usually not affordable to the average person.  The T1 connection alone can cost more than $1000 USD a month.

An ISP leased line is used primarily for private voice and/or high-speed data transference.  Because of their high bandwidth, leased lines are typically used by large businesses that need a fast connection between the main company and sister companies.  They are very commonly used to connect geographically distant buildings because of the guaranteed high bandwidth.  While most commonly used for transferring large amounts of data between company buildings as well as a method of communicating, a leased line can also be used to provide high-speed Internet service.

One of the more popular types of ISP leased lines is known as ADSL, or asymmetric digital subscriber line.  While it is not nearly as fast as a T1 or T3 connection, ADSL can still provide a high speed Internet connection.  Typical speeds for an asymmetric digital subscriber line are eight megabits per second download and one megabit per second upload, hence the name asymmetric.  Most people download lots of data, from surfing the web, but rarely do they upload massive files.  The average user will normally send large email attachments every now and then, rather than multiple times a day as well as uploading files to a network.  Therefore, an ADSL leased line is one of the most commonly used leased line available.

Ranging from the expensive, but extremely fast, T1 and T3 to the more affordable, yet slower, asymmetric digital subscriber line, ISP leased lines are used almost everywhere.  Large businesses that can afford T1 or T3 connections typically use them to provide always on telecommunications between their main company and sister companies around the world.  Sometimes these leased lines are used to provide high-speed Internet service for the company, but because it is always on, this can be a security risk because dedicated hackers, as well as malicious software, can creep into the company network.  However, for voice communication or data transference, a leased line connection is the way to go.
