Pros And Cons Of The Aironet Wireless Bridge
The Cisco Aironet Wireless Bridge is the premier high-speed, high-performance outdoor bridging solution for line-of-sight applications. It is designed as a cheaper alternative to leased lines. Its primary customer must provide service in a rugged environment with severe operating temperatures. Cisco claims throughput of 54 Mbps. It supports both point to point and point to multipoint configurations. It has a variety of features and interfaces with multiple LANS wonderfully in a metropolitan area. Although it also claimed to be easy to install and operate, there are a few points to consider before accepting this totally! Considering it is a Cisco product, the user must be proficient in both Aironet wireless LAN fundamentals and wireless bridging! If you read the curriculum for the classes offered to maintain (or install) this device, most folks will see that it is not as easy to as it might be claimed. There seems to be a “bug” in the software recovery process also. When using Cisco Aironet Wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment, it may become necessary to perform a password recovery or to restore the default settings on the equipment. Unlike other Cisco platforms, the Cisco Aironet hardware and software do not necessarily allow password recovery. In some instances you must return the equipment to its default state, and then reconfigure!? Unless this has been corrected, and unless you understand the process this might become a real downtime issue. Cost is another consideration. The initial cost of setting up your system adds up. You must weigh the long-term cost of lease lines though to appreciate the value. The initial costs will include the wireless bridge (around $5,000), antennas (around $870), and evaluation of service area to see if it is practical and technical administrative costs. Adding back up or redundant duplex network facilities can also be hard on the pocket book! If you are setting this up for the first time you might also need cables and wall-mount kits and so on. Once the initial costs have been defined the value of the Aironet Wireless Bridge can quickly recover the cost! Your re-occurring costs will be less than a typical lease line configuration. There are less costly Cisco Aironet Wireless Bridges available. These may save you several thousand dollars, but will not provide the level of performance or features the higher level bridges do. Your application might not need to be too complicated either. You might need it for your school campus or hospital. We used it for one customer who lived across a body of water and on a mountain! Cisco is known for its flexibility and innovation. Once the consistency catches up and the costs go down, the bridges will become a norm instead of an alternative! The bridges are 802.11 compatible and ideal for cafes and restaurants or bridged 802.11b cells for mobile networks. The future with products like this is exciting!
